Master Maye was born in Ely, Nevada and moved to Oregon at the age of thirteen. Master Maye wanted to learn how to defend himself, as he had experienced an environment in Nevada where fighting was both tolerated and ignored. He began his martial arts training with Karate lessons at Lewis Karate in Scappoose (now Lewis Taekwondo).
Master Maye was focused and enjoyed the challenge of Karate, earning his Black Belt at the age of fifteen. Master Maye has also trained in Shotokan Karate, Kung Fu, Kajukenbo and Tae Kwon Do. He started teaching at the age of nineteen, eventually joining with Lewis TKD in 2000.
Master Maye has a unique style of teaching, where he tries to focus on the individual rather than the group, developing each person according to their skill level, strength and commitment. The martial arts training students receive is not limited to one style, instead it combines Taekwondo, Karate, and Judo. Each student is expected to draw on their own self-discipline and inner reserves in order to get the most out of the class. One of Master Maye’s favorite sayings is: “You’re only cheating yourself,” most often used when someone isn’t doing their best. Discipline at the Dojang is not based on intimidation or fear. Instead, Master Maye encourages students to follow the rules of the Dojang and the Tae Kwon Do code of conduct.
Master Maye is a 5th degree Black Belt. Competition was and still is something Master Maye enjoys. He has won three Sport Karate World Titles, was a member of the National Black Belt League and the National Karate Team DDX, and has been ranked as a top fighter in the U.S. for the past twenty years. Master Maye also competes in Olympic style Tae Kwon Do and has trained and coached many Olympic style and Sport Karate Regional, National, and World Champions.
